Born and raised in Birmingham to immigrant parents, he has said that practising law lets him defend the freedoms that brought his family to the United States. He worked in business with his father before entering the profession. He earned a B.A. in sociology and political science from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1991 and a J.D. from Birmingham School of Law in 1995, and has been a member of the Alabama State Bar since 1996.
